Bonn, Germany - On December 1 and 2, AFR100 Initiative partners took their experience to the masses at the Global Landscapes Forum Bonn 2018. They emphasized that AFR100 embraces a broad focus on implementing integrated landscape management to address land and forest degradation at scale. The GLF event has become a great way for the initiative to re-connect with partners and forge new alliances.
Young restoration champions from Malawi, Niger, Cameroon/Nigeria, and Rwanda profiled what they have accomplished during the AFR100 side event “The future of AFR100: Restoration Opportunities for young people.” They spoke about the role of youth in closing the gap between pledges to AFR100 and implementation and in facilitating investment and innovative solutions on the ground. In developing African countries where agriculture and forestry contribute significantly to the economy, landscape restoration is a key strategy to meet climate change adaptation, resilience goals and countries' Agenda 2063 aspirations.
On December 3 and 4, the AFR100 Secretariat at NEPAD Agency met its implementing partners at the sixth session of the AFR100 Initiative Executive Committee meeting. The meeting aimed to inform partners on the state of AFR100 and how far along the initiative is in facilitating investment flows, in strengthening coordination for effective restoration throughout Africa, and in supporting restoration initiatives which share similar goals and partners. At the meeting, partners discussed the priorities for 2019. The top priorities identified were monitoring and reporting FLR progress, increasing finance flows for restoration, increasing the engagement of partners who directly implement FLR on the ground, and increasing technical support to Francophone countries.
