Identification of Restoration Opportunities in Togo’s Lacs Prefecture

Back to All News

Togo's first major FLR project, a pilot of 400,000 hectares in the country’s Lacs Prefecture, began in 2017. As a first step, a group of experts and the local community have identified the priority restoration areas for Lacs (see image below). The analysis combined satellite imagery analysis (RapidEye 2013-2014), the results of a participatory mapping workshop, and the prefectural forest inventory to create a comprehensive map of restoration opportunities.

The priority areas could all benefit from restoration activities, including forest enrichment, agroforestry, riverbank restoration, tree plantation expansion, community forest management, wetland and swamp restoration and more. Four zones have been identified for the implementation of different FLR interventions.
