This project is being implemented for a period of five years from 2022 to 2027 with a nationwide target for the first to fourth outputs and pilot counties in Semi –Arid areas for the second output particularly in some commercial forestry related activities.
OVERALL GOAL - Sustainable forest management and landscape restoration are promoted for achieving and maintaining over 10% tree cover in line with Constitution of Kenya, Vision 2030 and NDCs among others.
The Ministry of Environment, Climate Change and Forestry is responsible for the Project, whereas the Ministry, Kenya Forest Service and Kenya Forestry Research Institute are the implementing agencies. There are coordinating agencies including the Council of Governors and Intergovernmental Relations Technical Committee (IGTRC).
Achievements
- Policy planning processes for sustainable forest management and landscape restoration are strengthened
- Enabling environment to support the promotion of commercial forestry with public-private partnerships and community participation is strengthened
- Melia volkensii and Acacia tortilis productivity and drought tolerance are improved and their production capacity for promoting their commercial use is enhanced.
- Enhanced KFS and KEFRI's capacity and roles in regional cooperation to contribute to the Sub Saharan African region in promoting sustainable forest management, landscape restoration and climate change mitigation and adaptation.
