Creating Lands of Opportunity: Transforming Livelihoods through Landscape Restoration in the Sahel Project

The project is funded by the Italian Ministry of Environment, Land and Sea (IMELS) through the Global Mechanism of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) for a period of 3 years (August 2020-July 2023).The overall objective is to make a significant and sustainable contribution towards landscape restoration in the Sahel Region while creating income-generating activities for local communities in Burkina Faso, Ghana and Niger.

IUCN is the lead implementing Agency of the project together with identified Partners in all the three countries.In Ghana, the project is implemented in four (4) districts and eight (8) communities namely: Dalaasa and Naadema (Builsa South District); Yamerga and Awaredone (Talensi District); Tarikom and Gbango, (Bawku West District) Nanchala and Sakalu (Sisala East District) within the Upper East and Upper West Regions.IUCN is implementing the project in partnership with EPA, A Rocha Ghana and CSI-SARI.

 

Project achievements during as of 2021 are as follows:

 

  • Engagement of 360 project beneficiaries from the communities, including 184 women. The beneficiaries were sensitized on sustainable agricultural practices and provided tree seedlings for planting along river banks and on community conserved lands;
  • A total area of 200 ha was put under restoration, including 140 ha within agricultural lands (trees-on-farm) and 60 ha of enrichment planting.
