The Bhidlilili Wetlands Protection Project focused on rehabilitating degraded wetlands through controlled livestock grazing and reducing pesticide and fertilizer use to improve water quality. The project was implemented by Eswatini Environment Authority in partnership with the World Vision Eswatini and Eswatini National Trust Commission, with funding from the Eswatini Environment Fund (E239,444.00) and World Vision co-financing (E600,000.00). Restoration efforts protected 90 hectares of wetland, with plans for expansion as the area regenerates over time . The project benefited 347 households, impacting 3,723 women across three chiefdoms namely; Mabonabulawe, Kwayiweni, and Mchinsweni Royal Kraals and aimed to increase household income through sustainable practices.

As a result, women from the Bhidlilili area harvested 21 tons of likhwane, which they used to make grass mats and other products, significantly boosting their income. This has allowed families to support their children with school fees, food, and other essentials. Additionally, 178 children from 89 households benefited from improved financial security. Bhidlilili’s historical significance as a heritage site, including its connection to King Ngwane, further enhances the project’s cultural and educational impact, helping preserve local history while fostering environmental awareness
