Steps to Success

Stakeholder involvement

Through a multi-stakeholder’s recommendation, a national stakeholder group (National Drought Initiative and Land Degradation Neutrality Technical Working Group) was established with the objective to drive Liberia’s LDN target setting processes in consultation with the UNCCD National Focal Institution, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Since the inception phase of the LDN target setting programme, the following stakeholders were engaged: Academic Institutions; Research Institutions,  Private Sector; National Disaster Management Agency; Environment Protection Agency (EPA); Forestry Development Authority (FDA); Liberia Land Authority (LLA); Liberia Institute for Statistics & Geo-Information Services (LISGIS); Ministry of Finance and Development Planning; Ministry of Gender, Children & Social Protection; Ministry of Transport (Meteorological Unit/Department); Ministry of Agriculture (MoA); Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA); Ministry of Mines and Energy (MME); CSOs (Civil Society Organizations); UNFCCC Focal Point and; UNCBD Focal Point. These stakeholders are jointly working towards achieving Liberia LDN TSP.

A coordinating mechanism/platform

The Land Degradation Neutrality Technical Working Group is set to ensuring the implementation of Liberia’s Land Degradation Neutrality Target Setting Program (LDNTSP). The LDN Technical Working Group was established with the objective to drive Liberia’s LDN target setting processes in consultation with the UNCCD National Focal Institution, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The working group coordinates all the active LDN implementers and develops a series of reports against LDN progress. And these include Land degradation trends and drivers; and possible solutions implemented to address the problems. These reports are subjected to a national validation process where stakeholders’ views are incorporated, and documents finalized.

Capacity building

The national focal point and the working group will put in place a capacity development plan to improve human resources capacity for implementation of the forest landscape restoration, sustainable use of natural resources as well as for monitoring of FLR implementation progress in order to fully achieve LDN targets by 2030.

Partnership

Liberia acknowledges the great partnership with the Global Mechanism of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) which made possible the Liberia’s Land Degradation Neutrality Targets and associated measures. Liberia also appreciate members of the National Drought Initiative and Land Degradation Neutrality Technical Working Group composed by different stakeholders for their dedication and insightfulness in ensuring the implementation of Liberia’s Land Degradation Neutrality Target Setting Program (LDNTSP). Liberia is grateful to all stakeholder representatives from line ministries, agencies, and commissions (MACs), academia, civil society and non-governmental organizations, private sector and other individuals for their valuable support to government in implementing its commitment towards Land Neutral Development by 2030.

Our Vision

Liberia committed to achieve LDN by 2030 as compared to 2015 and improve an additional 10% of the national landscape (net gain).

Priority Interventions:

  • Support Liberia in the sustainable management of natural resources through increased vegetation cover to improve ecosystem services in degraded areas, increase rural income, and improve biodiversity richness.
  • Improve data and information sharing on land-use in Liberia to help inform larger land-use planning decisions through the Liberia Forest Atlas.
  • Contribute to the REDD+ program in Liberia through the restoration of degraded lands and supporting local livelihoods at the community level.
  • Supporting Liberia to meet its international commitments, particularly their adaptation goals in the INDC, and reducing emissions from deforestation and degradation.
