Restoration Commitment

Restoration Commitment:
2 million hectares
Year Committed:
2011
Priority Interventions:
  • Support Rwanda to achieve Vision 2020 and targets set in the Economic Development and Poverty Reduction Strategy II, which aim to boost the productivity of agriculture while increasing forest cover and improving the sustainability of natural resources and biodiversity. This will require scaling up successful tree-based forest and landscape restoration (FLR) approaches that improve crop and livestock practices, food security, and farmer income as well as trainings for farmers and extension service on the benefits of tree-based FLR.
  • Improve scientific evidence-based feedback loop for planning and implementing tree-based FLR in Rwanda. This includes capacity building of cost-effective methods for measuring change at scale over time and harmonization around a national and public forestry platform that shares environmental and socioeconomic progress of tree-based FLR across Rwanda.
  • Expand opportunities for investment in tree-based FLR over the long term by creating enabling conditions for social enterprises, donors and investors.
  • Support Rwanda to meet its international development and environmental commitments such as the Sustainable Development Goals, Nationally Determined Contribution, Convention for Biodiversity, and Land Degradation Neutrality target.
Alignment with domestic targets:

Widespread implementation of landscape restoration would contribute to Rwanda’s Vision 2020, Economic Development and Poverty Reduction Strategy, MINIRENA Results Based Management, District Development Plan, and District Forest Management targets.  FLR would also add to NDC and multiple SDGs including monitoring and reporting for SDG indicator 15.3 on land degradation and indirectly to SDG 1 and 2 on poverty and food security.

Requested assistance from AFR100:

Widespread implementation of landscape restoration would contribute to multiple SDGs including monitoring and reporting on SDG indicator 15 on land degradation. FLR also indirectly contributes to SDG 1 and 2 on poverty and food security. Continued facilitation of investors and donors that are interested in supporting to the above interventions.
