Restoration Commitment

Restoration Commitment:
1.5 million hectares
Year Committed:
2022
Priority Interventions:
  • Climate change mitigation and adaptation: Somalia aims to make the Somali people more resilient to climate change, recognizing their high vulnerability in an economy that is dominated by subsistence agriculture and livestock rearing and undermined by the heterogeneity of clan-based conflicts.
  • Maintain and improve the land productivity and Soil Organic Carbon at national level by 2030 compared to 2015 baseline: Somalia targets to increase national forest cover from 10.14% (2015) to 10.20% (2022) and maintain it at 30% by 2030 through agroforestry and SLM in existing forests. Through the latter, the country envisions to increase land protected against soil erosion to 1,034,509 ha by 2024 and reduce areas of stressed or declining land productivity by 50% by 2030.
Requested assistance from AFR100:
  • Identifying and assessing priority landscapes.
  • Conducting an economic analysis of restoration options to build the business case for landscape restoration.
  • Identifying and assessing financing mechanisms that can scale up investment in landscape restoration.
