World Resources Institute (WRI)

Sean DeWitt
Director for the Global Restoration Initiative

The World Resources Institute (WRI) is a global research organization that spans more than 50 countries. Its more than 1,000 experts and staff work with leaders to turn big ideas into action to sustain the world’s natural resources – the foundation of economic opportunity and human well-being.

WRI applies a philosophy of “count it, change it, scale it” to address urgent sustainable development challenges related to food, forest, and water resources, climate, energy, and cities and transport. Attention to governance, finance, business, and economics underpins these efforts. WRI translates data, research, and analysis into strategies that inform government policies, business strategies, and civil society action to alleviate poverty and sustain a healthy environment.

Through its Global Restoration Initiative WRI is working with governments, businesses, and communities to restore 500 million hectares of deforested and degraded land around the world. In Africa, WRI makes strategic and technical contributions to the AFR100 initiative and supports partners to assess restoration opportunities, develop restoration strategies, and accelerate implementation on the ground.
